About the ARA
Introduction
ARA combines four MatchBox lasers into one single-mode, polarisation-maintaining fibre — and does it on a photonic-IC waveguide chip rather than with mirrors.
That distinction is the product. Mirrors need alignment, and alignment is what a dropped or vibrated instrument loses. A waveguide chip has no alignment to lose.
Specification
The datasheet gives four channel ranges, two of which are the same span; the three distinct ranges are listed above. Which range sits on which channel is a configuration question — settle it with the order.
Built to be carried
Vibration-proofed and thermal-shock resistant, and aimed explicitly at handheld portable devices. Most four-wavelength sources assume a bench that does not move and a room that does not change temperature. This one does not.
The waveguide chip is why that claim is credible rather than aspirational: there is no free- space path inside it to fall out of alignment.
Polarisation-maintaining matters here
Single-mode fibre gives a clean spatial mode. Polarisation-maintaining fibre also holds the polarisation state along the length of it.
For confocal and fluorescence microscopy, and for anything using polarisation as a discriminator, that is the difference between a usable source and one that has to be re-conditioned at the far end.
Laser class
Not stated in the datasheet. ARA houses the same four MatchBox laser modules as the MatchBox Combiner, so the same framework applies: class follows the wavelength and power of each channel, and the OEM's integration can change it. Confirm the classification of the configuration you order.
Applications
Confocal and fluorescence microscopy. Flow cytometry. Life sciences. Food sorting and inspection. Metrology and medical applications.
Where it fits
MatchBox Combiner does the same job with micro-optics into multi-mode fibre or free space, and is the choice where free-space output is wanted. ARA is the choice where the output must be single-mode and polarisation-maintaining, or where the instrument moves.
